“Biggest punk band most people have never heard of” to play in York

The band, who released their eighth and final studio album ‘Hand on Heart’ in April last year, will perform at the venue on Saturday, December 13.

This will be the only chance for fans to see the band on home soil this year at their own headline show.

Daryl Smith of Cock Sparrer said: “There were no plans to play the UK this year.

“We played half a dozen times in 2024 and wrapped the year up with ‘Album of the Year’ in Vive Le Rock magazine and we’re happy with that.

“But the Sparrer faithful clearly weren’t happy with us hitting the rest of the world and not having a home gig.

“So, we have a few beers and ask ourselves, ‘where’s the best place for a pre-Christmas jolly up?’

“York of course.

“Stunning city at the best of times, but at Christmas it’s magical and the perfect setting for our only UK headline show of 2025.”

A spokesperson added: “Cock Sparrer are a band that have had their career in reverse.

“They’re the biggest punk band most people have never heard of – and are more popular now than at any time in their career or at the ‘height’ of punk.

“Any night of the week, anywhere in the world, if they’re playing, the Sparrer faithful turn up en-masse to have a party.”

Despite being reportedly courted by Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, early tours with the Small Faces, Thin Lizzy, Motörhead, and Slade, and a record deal with Decca, the music industry “just wasn’t ready for Cock Sparrer,” added the spokesperson.

The spokesperson said: “Once all the hype around punk had died down and all the ‘famous’ punk bands were no longer invited on Top of The Pops, Cock Sparrer started to carve out their own path and pick up likeminded people along the way – the Sparrer family.”
