Echoes Across the Ages: Renaissance & Contemporary Choral Music

Contrafactum draws together talented amateur and semi-professional singers to work intensively on short projects at home and abroad.

The programme will explore pairs of choral works which use the same text: one from the Renaissance period and one by a living composer. Featuring O salutaris hosia (Byrd and Esenvalds), Alma redemptoris mater (Lassus and McDowall), Lady, when I behold (Wilbye and Mealor) the concert will culminate in James’s MacMillan’s monumental setting of Psalm 50: Miserere mei – contrasted with that of Jean L’Heritier composed around 500 year earlier.

JanJoost van Elburg is a prominent Dutch choral conductor and singer, renowned for his expertise in early music. He is much sought after as a vocal coach and teacher of ensemble technique, singing theory and choral conducting. He has directed his own choir highly acclaimed choir, Lelikoor, in Amsterdam for over 30 years.
