Explosions fail to demolish Able crane at Middlesbrough Port

THE PLANNED demolition of a large crane at Middlesbrough Port did not go to plan on Sunday.

The large ‘Goliath’ gantry crane at Able Middlesbrough Port, which is visible around the Middlehaven area, was scheduled to be brought down today (Sunday) after a planned controlled explosion.

The operation, prior to the recycling of the structure, drew large crowds in the surrounding area as people gathered to see the famous structure demolished.

However onlookers were left disappointed when the explosions did nothing but cause small plumes of smoke to blow out.

Able UK, which owns the crane, said engineers are now “assessing” the site to decide on the next stage of the demolition.

A second attempt at the demolition could take place later on Sunday evening.
