The MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland spoke in a Westminster Hall debate on defence procurement led by Alan Strickland, MP for Newton Aycliffe and Spennymoor.
Luke highlighted Teesside’s strong industrial base and the untapped potential of local businesses, pointing to Tees Components in North Skelton as a prime example of how the region can contribute to national defence. The company provides precision machining for the Royal Navy’s Astute-class submarines and plays a crucial role in skills training and local employment.
He said: “We once built the world, and today we stand ready to defend it. Companies like Tees Components showcase the talent, innovation, and industrial capability that Teesside has to offer. But too often, businesses like these are left to struggle for a seat at the table when it comes to MoD contracts.”
He criticised the fact that only 4% of direct MoD expenditure goes to SMEs, with many facing barriers such as late payments and a lack of procurement opportunities. He supported calls for a centrally managed body to oversee defence contracts.
