York Art Gallery

Step into the world of art and culture at York Art Gallery, where over 600 years of painting history are on display. The gallery’s collection spans from 14th-century Italian panels and 17th-century Dutch masterpieces to Victorian narrative paintings and iconic 20th-century works by renowned artists such as LS Lowry and David Hockney. Visitors can also explore the most extensive collection of British Studio Ceramics, featuring the prestigious collections of Dean Milner–White, WA Ismay, Henry Rothschild, and a long-term loan from Anthony Shaw.

Housed in a historic building that first opened its doors in 1879 for the Second Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition, the gallery was inspired by London’s Great Exhibition of 1851. By 1892, it became the City Art Gallery, cementing its place as a cultural cornerstone in York. The gallery overlooks Exhibition Square, created in 1879, which offers views of the city walls and the iconic York Minster. At the heart of the square stands a statue of York-born artist William Etty, erected in 1911. York Art Gallery boasts the largest collection of Etty’s work, and in 2011 it hosted the first major exhibition of his paintings and sketches in 50 years, complemented by loans from other leading galleries.

Visitors can enjoy a journey through artistic history, from classical and Renaissance works to modern masterpieces, all set within a stunning architectural setting that reflects the city’s rich heritage. Whether you are an art enthusiast, student, or family visitor, York Art Gallery offers an inspiring and educational experience that brings centuries of creativity to life.
