Businessman Robert Cairns has shared plans to transform a former tiling premises on North West Industrial Estate in Peterlee into a multi-purpose space for the community and business growth.
Mr Cairns, who recently leased the unit, aims to convert part of the site into a hub for creative and commercial activities while dedicating the rest to the refurbishment of double-decker buses for mobile use.
He said: “This unit has so much potential and I believe is the perfect space for me to grow my business.
“I want to use it for two main functions.”
He said the first function is to serve as a community and business hub.
The unit could offer workspace for artists and be available for business events, training, or development.
The second function involves converting disused double-decker buses into mobile venues.
Mr Cairns said: “That got me thinking that disused double-decker buses, which currently sit at scrap yards in the North East, could be given a new lease of life.
“Not only would that give them a new purpose when they’re no longer on the roads, and save them ending up in landfill, but it would also enable the creation of renovated buses that can be used for everything from mobile party spaces and bars to classrooms, kitchens, and drop-in clinics.”
Mr Cairns said: “My aim is that through the bus renovation arm of the business, I can become a one-stop shop for parties and festivals, as everything would be in one mobile space for anyone or any business that hires them.”
He is currently working with several organisations to get the project off the ground.
This includes Business Durham and Durham County Council, who are advising on regulatory requirements and potential support.
He is also engaging with East Durham Business Network to raise awareness of the venture in the local business community.
Discussions are underway with East Durham College about utilising the unit for some of its apprenticeship programmes.
Although still in the early stages of development, Mr Cairns hopes the project will not only create a resource for businesses and the community but also reduce the amount of scrap going to landfill.
