Northumbrian Water up for top utility award as it represents North East

The company has been shortlisted for Utility of the Year at the Utility Week Awards 2025 and will attend the ceremony on December 2.

Heidi Mottram, chief executive at Northumbrian Water, said: “To be shortlisted in so many categories and to be the only water company recognised for Utility of the Year is a huge honour for us.

“It’s a reflection of the passion, creativity and dedication of our teams across the business, and we’re excited to showcase the North East on a national stage.”

The Utility Week Awards celebrate organisations driving innovation, excellence, and transformation across the utilities sector.

Northumbrian Water has earned seven shortlistings across six categories, recognising projects focused on smarter, greener, and more customer-focused services.

One of the key projects is the £20 million Smart Sewers initiative, a UK-first scheme that uses smart sensors and AI to reduce storm overflow spills.

It is nominated in both the Digital Transformation and Innovation categories.

The company’s River Deep Mountain AI project is also shortlisted.

This initiative uses machine learning and digital modelling to monitor and address river pollution, helping to improve waterbody health across the UK.

Other shortlisted entries include the Smart from the Start customer experience programme, Making Harts’ Smart, and the WINEP Durham Transfer Scheme, which is a joint entry with Esh Construction.

Northumbrian Water’s sister company Essex & Suffolk Water has also been recognised for its Layer to Langford Pipeline.

The Unlocking Data Award shortlisting is for River Deep Mountain AI.

The full shortlist highlights Northumbrian Water’s efforts in digital transformation, environmental impact, infrastructure delivery, and data-driven innovation.

The winners of the Utility Week Awards 2025 will be revealed at the ceremony in London later this year.
